On 21st February the 4th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 9 Brigade, 3rd Division left the Cavalry Barracks in Ypres and moved to the front line into a new set of trenches to the south of Ypres where they stayed, in very wet conditions, for two days and nights. The battalion diary reports that there were many dead bodies lying around and that they buried dozens of them and that German fire resulted in a number of casualties on the first night. William Marsh. died from wounds on 22nd February and it is likely that he was wounded at this time.
